Child Care

About Us

Morning Star Montessori Centre (MSMC) provides Preschool and Kindergarten students with exceptional hands-on experiences full of exploration and discovery.  MSMC has been part of the Edmonton south side community since 1996. Limited class sizes, experienced Montessori trained teachers, a variety of learning techniques and integrating the best educational approaches makes MSMC an outstanding and exceptional kind of school.

Our Philosophy

MSMC adheres to the unique educational philosophy set out a century ago by Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori philosophy aims to develop the child’s innate desire to learn by using a child’s natural curiosity and love of knowledge. To educate the whole child Dr. Montessori felt the child must have the freedom to learn at his or her own pace and in an individualized manner.  She believed that children ages 0 to 6 are in the most important period of their lives. During these years, children's environment will have a great impact on developing and stimulating their intelligence to the maximum. She developed the "prepared environment" (an environment prepared with didactic equipment), which possesses a certain order and disposes the child to develop at his or her own capabilities in a non-competitive atmosphere.

Our Mission & Goal

MSMC is dedicated to the development of all children regardless of age, gender, race, social or cultural background and ability.  We believe that each child is unique, special, and valuable. We provide each child a safe, loving and learning environment where he or she can develop to his or her own potential in terms of physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social and creative growth.  Our goal is to cultivate children’s natural desire to learn, for them to become a lover of work and intellectual work where they have spontaneously chosen the activity and have carried it out with profound joy.

Our Programs

MSMC provides a thoughtfully and specially prepared environment, designed to promote academic, physical and psychological development.  We know that children learn best by using all their senses, so the well-designed Montessori materials support children's need to feel, hear, manipulate, and smell.  In our mixed-age classrooms, children are free to work at their own pace, collaborating in small groups lead by our Montessori teachers.  Close attention is paid to each child's needs and interests. Each child develops according to his or her own natural rhythm.  Children are able to learn and acquire an ‘inner discipline’ free of the need for external reinforcements.

At every level, our program is rich with:

  • a deeply interconnected curriculum that always focuses on integrated patterns of knowledge;
  • multi-sensory, self-directed learning;
  • an emphasis on both collaboration and independent thinking;
  • second language (Mandarin) learning; and
  • conflict resolution skill building.

We offer full day, half-day morning and afternoon Montessori programs, five days a week for 3 to 5 year olds.  We are also pleased to offer Out of School Care Program (OSC) to assist families who require extended care for their children. We offer care for Meyonohk School students (K to Grade 6) from 7:30 am to 8:38 am and 3:18 pm to 5:30 pm in a friendly environment that follows Montessori philosophy.
